St Edward's College is a Catholic independent co-educational day school catering for children from 3-18. It is a Christian community which strives to guide each of its pupils so that they may realise their potential and live their lives to the full. Founded as the Catholic Institute by Fr James Nugent, famous in his lifetime and since for his work with the poor, its staffing and administration were taken over by the Christian Brothers in 1902 and it was renamed St Edward's College in 1920. The school moved in 1938 to its 30-acre campus in Sandfield Park, West Derby, a village suburb mentioned in the Domesday Book. Since then a purpose-built Design Centre, a Sixth Form Centre and a Music School have been added. There are first rate sporting facilities on the campus and the Sports Complex has just been totally refurbished and includes a rebuilt swimming pool as well as a sports hall and gymnasium. Additionally there are floodlit all-weather astroturf pitches for hockey and tennis and a floodlit netball court. The Dining Hall has been doubled in size. Standards of discipline and morality are high and good manners and courtesy regarded as essential. The College is proud of its reputation for excellence all round. St Edward's is the Choir School to the Metropolitan Cathedral.
The SENIOR SCHOOL educates about 750 children aged 11-18 (Sixth Form 170) nearly all proceeding to University. A broad curriculum generates consistently high GCSE and 'A'-level results. 5 Assisted Places at 8, 70 11+ Assisted Places available; 5 for Sixth form. Bursaries and scholarships available at 11+ and Sixth Form and for Choristers. Music, sport and cultural activities are strong traditions.
The JUNIOR SCHOOL'S spacious self-contained buildings cater for about 300 pupils aged 3-11, offering in a Christian environment a broad, balanced National Curriculum education preparing pupils for the Senior School. Cathedral Scholarships available for Choristers. Musical and sporting activities are well established. The nursery, opened in 1994 is proving very popular.
